Can we all agree that your hair says a lot about you?? I think we’ve all had a moment where a hairstyle correlates with a life change (i.e. chopping all your hair off after a breakup #guilty) and it’s almost considered the universal symbol of new beginnings, am I right? Although this isn’t signifying a massive life change (lol) if you follow me on social media (@styledbymeganblog on Instagram) then you are probably already aware that I got NBR extensions a while back!
The reason why I decided to make this change is because after having short hair for YEARS (and loving it, btw) I decided it was time to mix it up. We all know that awkward in between length your hair gets to and then seems to just stop growing. Needless to say, patience may not be my strongest feature which means that extensions are the most reasonable next move to make.
To say that I’m obsessed with my NBR extensions is a mild understatement, but that being said I know that getting extensions is a big decision and one that I put a lot of thought & research into. For that reason, I thought it might be helpful to share my experience/tips in case any of you out there might be interested in how it works!
As I mentioned, I did a lot of research beforehand to decide on what type of extensions I would go with. The biggest concern that I had with the process was not wanting to damage my natural hair. Ultimately, I fell in love with the NBR extensions not only because of the gorgeous before and afters on Instagram, but also because they are designed to be lightweight and damage-free. I was able to book an appointment at my favorite Ohio salon (Haven Salon) for a weekend when I was home and I was pleasantly surprised at how quick & easy the process was! After insuring that I was a qualified candidate for NBR’s my stylist (Catie) and I discussed my vision and how we would go about it. (It’s super helpful to have some hair inspo pics as a starting point!)
The process of installment was so easy and much quicker than I had anticipated. It took about 3-4 hours total (including cut, color and styling)! I ended up going with 8 wefts of hair with one full row and a second mini row to get the fullness + length that I was going for and I was so amazed at the results. Not only did I get the desired results but it’s guilt free knowing that my natural hair isn’t being damaged. Also, I wasn’t sure what to expect with regards to how it would feel on my head and I’m happy to say that it doesn’t bother me at all. If I could compare the feeling to something it would be like having a headband on your head- not uncomfortable to me in the least.
After getting the extensions, I wanted to be sure that I cared for them as best possible. A few ways that my routine has changed- I removed all products with sulfate from my routine, I don’t use heavy conditioners (such as hair masks), and the best part is that I don’t have to wash my hair as often! Although my hair care routine frequently changes, below are the products that I use on a pretty regular basis. Most of them I’ve used for a long time, but some are new!
1. Bumble & Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil shampoo & conditioner
3. Drybar Heat Protectant serum
5. 1 inch curling wand
At the end of the day, for me the best thing about hair is that you always have the ability to change it and try something new. Switching it up is my favorite thing to do and just go with what works for you! Also, I wanted to answer some frequently asked questions about my NBR extensions below. You can find more answers to these questions here as well.
Q: Is it uncomfortable to wear/sleep on? A: Not at all. It feels similar to wearing a headband!
Q: Can you wear it in a ponytail? A: Yes, it looks super cute + natural in a high or low pony!
Q: Can you work out/slash swim with them in! A: Yes, you can. I usually throw mine in a pony or a loose braid when I’m doing either of those things just to prevent tangles.
Thanks so much for stopping by and if you have any questions about the process that I didn’t already answer, please feel free to leave them in the comments below!
