My Top 5 Fitness Motivation Tips

Outfit deets: Lululemon tank (similar here and here) // Lululemon leggings (similar here) // Adidas sneakers

We all know that feeling when you’re sitting on your couch, binging your favorite show (hello Real Housewives of O.C.) and the last thing you want to do is get up and do that workout you’ve been thinking about all day. Why would you? You’re comfortable, you’re happy, and you really want to see how this fight between two cranky housewives ends, dammit! So what do you do? How do you motivate yourself to get up and do something you’ll thank yourself for later? If you’ve ever found yourself in this position then keep reading.

I’m sharing a few of my tips for staying motivated to keep up with a fitness routine in hopes that it might motivate someone else to do the same. However, keep in mind that I am BY NO MEANS an expert on this subject nor do I claim to know everything there is to know about working out and staying healthy. I’m just someone that enjoys staying active & doing things that make me feel good. That being said, I typically don’t stick to a super strict “routine” when I work out. I listen to my body and try to stay consistent with 3-5 workouts a week. My favorite workouts are some sort of cardio (usually a long run) followed by a set of exercises targeting one specific muscle group. Sometimes I use the machines in my gym & sometimes I do body-weight exercises. Again- back to listening to your body. I also like to throw in classes to mix things up. Some of my favorites are hot yoga, barre, and any type of cycle class. Also, if you are a class loving person like I am then check out Reserve King! Their app and website makes it super easy to book & keep track of all of the classes you’re taking. Now having said ALL of that, the following are my tips for staying motivated when it comes to fitness.

1. get a good playlist

It should go without saying, but I’ll say it anyway. If you really want to crush a workout (and feel like Beyonce while you’re doing) it, then I’m telling you you need a killer playlist! My go-to app for curating my workout playlists is Spotify. Even though it’s another monthly subscription to keep up with it is more than worth it to have all of my favorite songs ready to go at any given time. I’ll let you in on a little secret- this is my all-time favorite go-to must-have playlist. Listen now, thank me later.

2. set realistic goals

If you try to go from zero physical activity to running a marathon next month you’re probably going to have a tough time. The same goes with starting any workout routine or lifestyle change in general. Be realistic with yourself in terms of what you can actually fit into your schedule AND maintain long-term. There is no quick-fix when it comes to eating healthy or getting in shape. If you don’t see yourself making it to the gym 7 days a week then start with 2 and be proud of yourself for making it there at all! Progress is progress no matter how slow.

3. stop with the negative self-talk

If you’re only working out because you dislike the way you currently look then 9 times out of 10 you won’t stick with it because you’re doing it for the wrong reasons. Workout because you want to be strong. Workout to be healthy & have a longer life.  Workout for the post-workout high. Workout because you like the accomplished feeling that you get when you ran farther than you’ve ever run before. But whatever you do don’t workout because you hate your body. Negativity and being in the wrong frame of mind will never get you anywhere.

4. hold yourself accountable

Write it down, set a reminder on your phone, find a workout buddy -whatever you need to do to hold yourself accountable do it! Because if you don’t feel committed to changing and if you aren’t serious about it then you’ll never follow through. If you made a goal to workout 3 times this week then hold yourself to that and make it happen. You’re the only one that can stand in the way of accomplishing a goal that you have!

5. reward yourself

Be proud of yourself for the progress that you have made. If you set a goal to make it to the gym 3 days this week and you followed through with it, then buy yourself those shoes you’ve had your eye on or splurge on a new pair of leggings. Whatever you need to do to inspire yourself and stay motivated to keep going, do it!

I hope that reading these tips motivated you to start doing something today that your future self will thank you for! Now I’m going to get up off my couch and go workout myself 😉 If you have any tips for staying motivated to workout, let me know in the comments below!

Xx,

Megan
